About Us

In 1984, Dr. Charles W. Wetherbee led a group of people to organize the Maranatha Baptist Church in Columbus, GA. The first service was held on June 10 at their temporary meeting place, a church building on 38th Street. Two months later, approximately 200 people signed the church charter on August 12. For close to two years the congregation met in various temporary sites including a local bank and a recreational center. Finally, a seven-acre tract of land was purchased at the intersection of Double Churches Road and Willett Drive in north Columbus. Members of the church helped clear the land and assisted the contractor in building the new auditorium and Sunday School wing. Temporary services were held under the pine trees at the front of the property until the new building could be occupied in 1986.

Since the church was founded, hundreds of souls have been saved and many have surrendered to preach the gospel here in the United States and on the foreign mission field. In 1993, Dr. Wetherbee accepted the call to pastor Victory Baptist Church in Weatherford, Texas.

In 2000, under the leadership of Bro. Doug Hodges, the church added a new gymnasium and Sunday School building. Later that year, Bro. Doug followed the Lord's leading and left Maranatha to return to missions work.

In January 2002, Rev. Mark Brown accepted the call to become Maranatha's fourth pastor. Pastor Brown preached his first sermon as pastor on February 3, 2002. He continued with 22 years of faithful, loving service to his Lord and his church. He led Maranatha through some of our hardest days, most notably through the destruction and reconstruction of our church building. In January 2024, Bro. Mark left Maranatha to follow the Lord’s leading to serve in a new phase of ministry.

In February 2024, Dr. Charles Wetherbee came back “home” to Maranatha to serve as transitional pastor as we seek the Lord’s will in calling a new pastor.

Maranatha has continued to thrive. Souls are being saved, new families are joining with us, and new workers are being called into the ministry. We thank God for 40 years of faithfulness to Maranatha and we look forward to many more.

We Believe

The Holy Scriptures

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired Word of God, the final authority for faith and life.
II Timothy 3:16-17

The God Head

We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
II Corinthians 13:14

The Person and Work of Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men. John 1:1-2, 14  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, physical resurrection from the dead. Romans 3:24-25  We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate.
Hebrews 9:24: 7:25

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and, that He is the Supernatural Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. John 16:8-11  We believe that He is the Divine Teacher who guides believers into all truth.
John 6:13

Sin Nature

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam’s sin, the race fell.  We believe that man inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God.
Romans 3:22-23

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins; and , that it is always accompanied by repentance.
Ephesians 2:8-10

The Second Advent of Christ

We believe in the Blessed Hope, the personal, imminent, pre-tribulation and pre-millennial coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for His redeemed ones.
I Thessalonians 4:13-18

The Eternal State

We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the saved to eternal life, and the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment.
Revelation 20:5-6, 12-13
